DROP FORGING PROCESS or Die Forging Drop forging is a mass production technique which hammers the metal between two dies. Half of the die is attached to the "hammer" (upper section) and half to the "anvil" (lower section). The hot metal is placed in the lower half of the die and then "struck" one or more times with the upper die. This forces the metal to flow in all directions, filling the die cavity. Excess metal is squeezed out between the die faces is called flash or flashing. After the forging operation the flash is cut off in another press with a trimming die. Drop forging is normally suitable for the production of high strength small and medium size objects, such as wrenches, gear blanks, machine parts, fasteners, and engine parts |

| ADVANTAGES | DISADVANTAGES |
Forging results in metal that is stronger than cast or machined parts, because the metal's grain flow changes into the shape of the part during the forging process. |
Drop forging is more expensive for mass production than casting, due to the cost of the tooling and secondary operations normally needed to complete the parts |
