| Low Cost - High Quality Forging - Ferrous & Non-Ferrous |
PRESS FORGING PROCESS Press forging, this is a slow squeezing action used to form metal. The slow action penetrates the entire workpiece, making possible the forging of large objects. Press forgings are made in large presses, with size that exceeds 50,000 tons. Those up to 10,000 ton capacity may be either mechanically or hydraulically operated, but the larger presses are hydraulically powered. The quality of the piece is better than drop forging as there is more control over the grain flow of the material, but it takes longer and requires more energy. Press forging may be either open or closed dies. Open dies are often simply flat surfaces in which the material is squeezed, but they may also be V-shaped or slightly convex. Small parts are often forged in closed dies in one stroke. Larger parts may require one or more additional strokes. Large objects such as wheels, spars for aircraft wings, and aircraft landing gear beams are pressed forged. |

| ADVANTAGES | DISADVANTAGES |
Forging results in a workpiece that is stronger than cast or machined parts, due to during the forging process the metal's grain flow changes into the shape of the part. |
Press forging is more expensive for mass production than casting and other forging processes due to the cost of the tooling, slow production rate, and secondary operations normally needed to complete the parts |
